Edgewood Apartment Fire Causes $5K Damage: State Fire Marshal

An apartment fire has caused an estimated $5,000 in damage. Investigators believe it started with improperly discarded smoking materials.

EDGEWOOD, MD — A fire broke out Wednesday shortly after 7 a.m. at an apartment building located at 1606 Ashby Square, Unit H, in Edgewood.

Eight firefighters with the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company responded and reigned in the fire within five minutes. Officials noted that the fire broke out in a bedroom and suspect improperly discarded smoking materials as the cause, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office.

The resident was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm in the apartment. The fire sprinkler system kicked on and held the fire at bay until the fire department arrived. Estimated loss has been pegged at $5,000.
