The play takes place in 1980's England and explores what women are willing to give up in order to become "Top Girls." Marlene, the main character, has just been promoted to managing director of the Top Girls Employment Agency. We watch her celebrate her promotion with various women from history, fiction, and painting. We then see her at work and at her sister's home.
