BEL AIR, MD — A fire in a Bel Air apartment unit Thursday night caused an estimated $100,000 damage and displaced one resident, according to officials.

A resident in a unit of the Calvert Walk Apartments, 2209 Byrnes Court in Bel Air, reported the fire about 7:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal. The preliminary cause of the fire is electrical failure.

When the resident arrived home he had no electricity, and then discovered smoke in his bedroom and a dark stain on the ceiling, the fire marshal said. Firefighters found and extinguished a fire in the attic of the three-story apartment building.

Authorities said the smoke alarm did not activate because the fire started within the attic.

Damage is estimated at $75,000 to the apartment structure and $25,000 to the resident's property
