Fire Marshal Seeks Leads in Abingdon Blaze

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is asking for information about a fire that occurred in Abingdon earlier this week.

At 3:58 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, a passerby saw smoke coming from an abandoned mobile home in the 2800 block of Philadelphia Road, according to the fire marshal.

On their way to the fire, Abingdon and Joppa-Magnolia firefighters could see a “large column of smoke...over the area,” the Abingdon Fire Company reported.

Crews found a mobile home completely engulfed, and the fire had spread to the surrounding vegetation, according to Abingdon’s report.

Thirty-five firefighters—from Joppa-Magnolia, Abingdon and Bel Air—responded, bringing the blaze under control in 20 minutes, the fire marshal reported.

Firefighters remained in the area for two hours clearing the scene, ensuring the fire was out, according to Abingdon Fire Company.

The fire marshal said there was $200 in damage to the structure.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation, the fire marshal said Tuesday.
