Joppa-Magnolia Firefighters Trapped Inside Engine After Crash With Vehicle: Official

Firefighters with the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company became trapped in their engine after colliding with a car, an official said.

JOPPA, MD — Firefighters with the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company became trapped in their engine on Tuesday after colliding with a car while en route to a separate car crash they'd been summoned to help with.

Shortly before noon, the fire company was called out to assist with a car crash in the 1000 block of Pulaski Highway in Edgewood. Just after noon, as the engine was responding to the accident with its lights and siren activated when it was involved in a crash with a civilian vehicle and a power pole on Hanson Road at Woodbridge Center Way in Edgewood, the fire company reported.

The four firefighters inside were trapped in the fire engine until BGE crews could turn off electricity in the area where the utility pole came down. One civilian was taken to University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health in stable condition, according to the fire company.

Rescue Engine 8 is a 2007 Pierce Mfg Enforcer fire engine that carries 750 gallons of water and special rescue tools like the jaws of life extraction tool. The JMVFC has additional fire engines in the fleet, so fire engine responses and response times will not be affected by the crash, the fire company posted on Facebook.
