Forest Hill's Jeff Judge in U.S. News: A dividend on a fund tells you almost nothing about its risk
Most income funds aren't as safe as their name suggests. Know what you actually own before you retire on it.

When U.S. News & World Report asked me about Fidelity's ETF lineup this month, the fund I kept coming back to was a dividend fund that does not behave the way its name suggests.
It sounds conservative. It pays income, it holds large, familiar companies, and the word "dividend" reads as safe. Then you look at the holdings and find nearly a third of it sitting in technology, led by names like Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft. Earlier this year that same fund leaned toward energy. After a routine reshuffle, it leaned toward tech instead.

I have had clients believe they owned a cautious equity fund simply because it paid a dividend, then realize it was far more cyclical than they expected. The label on a fund is not the risk. What it actually holds is the risk.
For pre-retirees here in Harford County, this is the part that matters. If you are within a few years of leaving work, a 30% technology weighting behaves very differently in a downturn than the word "dividend" implies. That is not a reason to avoid a fund. It is a reason to open it up and read what is inside before you lean on it for income.

The same idea applies to anything new and exciting, including a Bitcoin fund. Before you add a position, ask two questions. What is your reason for owning it, and what happens to your plan if it goes to zero? If you cannot answer both, that is worth pausing on.
The practical takeaway: know what each part of your portfolio is for before you count on it.
