Gas Line Break Closes Macphail Road
Upper Chesapeake Medical Center is still accessible, officials said.
BEL AIR, MD — A road near Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air is closed Tuesday afternoon due to a gas line break. There is still access to the hospital, officials advised.
A contractor hit a 4-inch gas line around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 26, in the area of West Macphail Road at Tollgate Road, according to Jenn Chenworth, spokeswoman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.
BGE is at the scene on West Macphail Road at Tollgate Road, Chenworth reported after 2 p.m.

While the fire department had cleared the scene, BGE crews remained, Chenworth said.
Macphail Road remains closed between MD 24 and Tollgate Road.

She advised drivers to avoid the area.
"...there is no direct threat to the hospital or area residents," Chenworth said. "This incident is active and will take several hours to mitigate. Please avoid the area."
To get to the hospital during the interim, people should take MD 24 instead of the Tollgate Road traffic circle. From MD 24/Macphail Road, make the first left onto Lower Loop Road.
