Michael James is the first Harford County Public Schools educator to win Maryland Teacher of the Year since 1996.
PYLESVILLE, MD — A North Harford High School English teacher has been named the 2027 Maryland Teacher of the Year, becoming the first Harford County Public Schools educator to receive the statewide honor in 30 years.
Michael James, English department chair at North Harford High School and the 2026 Harford County Public Schools Teacher of the Year, received the honor Friday during the 36th Annual Maryland Teacher of the Year Gala at Martin’s Valley Mansion.

“This marks an incredible moment in HCPS history,” HCPS Superintendent Dyann R. Mack said. “Mr. James’ commitment to keeping our students at the center of his work is what makes him truly deserving of this honor. HCPS shines bright because of Mr. James.”
James has spent more than 30 years in education and has served as a teacher, coach, curriculum writer and professional development leader. He also participates in district workgroups focused on grading, reading and technology, and serves as advisor for Voices of Equity and editor of Misentity magazine.

James earned a bachelor of arts in English from Washington and Jefferson College in 1993 and a master of arts in reading from Towson University in 2004. He also is a National Board Certified Teacher.
“Winning Maryland Teacher of the Year is one of those things we teachers never think about because we didn’t get into teaching to receive awards,” James said. “This is a reminder that people appreciate and recognize our efforts to help students be the best versions of themselves. One of the most powerful adjectives I use in my classroom is ‘groovy,’ and if I’m being honest, tonight is one of the grooviest nights of my career.”
James was selected from among 24 school system Teachers of the Year and was one of seven finalists for the statewide award.
The other finalists were Alison Benkovic of Baltimore County Public Schools, Emily Brynes of Carroll County Public Schools, Kacy Valentine of Howard County Public School System, Clara Allsup of Prince George’s County Public Schools, Alice Tickler of Queen Anne’s County Public Schools and Dr. Chelsea Taylor of Wicomico County Public Schools.
A panel representing principals, educators, students and families evaluated the finalists based on student achievement, teaching philosophy, community involvement and knowledge of education issues.
“Michael James embodies the transformative power of teaching,” Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carey M. Wright said. “His innovation, compassion, and unwavering commitment to student success make him an extraordinary representative of Maryland’s educators. We are proud to honor his leadership and impact in our classrooms.”
State Board of Education President Dr. Joshua L. Michael also praised James’ work.
“Michael James’ work reflects the very best of Maryland’s teaching profession,” Michael said. “His commitment to elevating student achievement and empowering his colleagues demonstrates a deep passion for public education. The State Board is proud to recognize his accomplishments and looks forward to the impact he will continue to make across our schools.”
James will now represent Maryland in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
The Council of Chief State School Officers is expected to announce the national winner in April.
During the coming year, James also will serve as a speaker and advisor and participate in meetings and events connected with the National Teacher of the Year Program.
