Harford Superintendent Given Salute To Excellence

From Harford Public Schools: The Iota Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. honored Superintendent of Schools Barbara P. Canavan with the 2018 Salute to Excellence for her long, distinguished service as teacher and leader in the Harford County public school system. Mrs. Canavan received the honor at the chapter’s 41st Annual Donald J. Waldon Memorial Scholarship Banquet on March 11 at Richlin Ballroom. The theme of the event was “Education– Key to Success” and illustrated the role education plays in the success of those who partake in the lifelong endeavor.

The local chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha applauded Superintendent Canavan for her outstanding contribution to education, gifted her a plaque of recognition, and wished her well in her upcoming retirement.

Founded in 1906 at Cornell University, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.” Alpha Phi Alpha was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men.

The local chapter engages in programs and activities that help stimulate ambitions of the less fortunate; encourages the highest and noblest from of manhood; and aids local communities in efforts to achieve more favorable social, economic, and educational status.

The chapter’s Donald J. Waldon Memorial Scholarship has provided full academic scholarships to Harford Community College and Cecil College students. Associate degrees from these schools continue to propel scholarship recipients toward earning four-year and advanced degrees and into productive careers.
