HCPS To Serve Meals At 13 Locations During School Closures

Harford County Public Schools gave direction on the plans for meals, instruction and staffing during the mandatory closure of schools.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Harford County Public Schools issued guidance for families about what to expect during the state-mandated two-week closure of Maryland schools. Students were sent home with an instructional packet Friday, and meals will be provided starting Tuesday.

Day cares in Harford County Public Schools will stay open one hour later than usual Friday, March 13.

All public schools in Maryland will be closed for students Monday, March 16, through Friday, March 27, State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon said.

During that time, buildings and buses will be cleaned to stop any potential spread of the new coronavirus before students and staff return.

Student Work

An instructional packet will be sent home Friday and will also be provided on the HCPS coronavirus website, according to Harford County Public Schools.

It will be shared through the "Home Access Center," or HAC.

Staff Instructions

In Harford County Public Schools, officials issued this guidance for employees:

  • 12-month employees are to continue to report to work as normally scheduled
  • Custodians will determine their work schedule with their supervisors.
  • 11-month employees should wait for further instruction from their supervisors
  • 10-month employees will not report starting Monday, March 16

Any changes will be communicated to employees through normal channels, and all 10 and 12-month employees will continue to be paid according to the original pay schedule.

Food Service

Signs will be posted at 13 locations directing students to meal distribution locations.

Meal service will be provided starting Tuesday, March 17. It will continue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday for the remainder of the closure.

Meals will be provided to all children, ages 2-18, without charge.

Makeup Days

As of Friday, March 13, Harford County Public Schools said it was unclear whether the days would be made up or waived by the state.

Spring break is slated to be April 10 to 13 in Harford County Public Schools, and the state recommended that days previously scheduled for spring break be used for make-up days.

Initial Guidance

Harford County Public Schools issued the following guidance Thursday night:

"Tomorrow, Friday, March 13, 2020, there will be no school-sanctioned travel, which includes field trips, and there will be no after-school/evening activities. Tomorrow, your student will bring home instructional materials to be completed during the system-wide closure. This information will be accessible on HCPS.org."
