HCPS Teachers, Some Students, Virtual Sports Return October 12

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Teachers as well as some students will return to Harford County Public Schools Monday, Oct. 12. The school system is phasing in the return to in-person instruction.

Students who had been at Learning Support Centers for primary and secondary school will be back in school classrooms effective Monday, according to Harford County Public Schools spokesperson Jillian Lader.

Guidelines developed by principals and staff require students, teachers and staff to wear masks at all times, except when they are eating or outside with 6 feet of physical distance between people.

Initially, Learning Support Centers opened Sept. 8 for students who did not have internet access, who have special needs, whose parents are essential employees and others. More than 2,500 students signed up to attend these centers, according to Harford County Public Schools, which has a total enrollment of more than 38,000.

In addition to in-person learning, Harford County Public Schools will begin virtual athletics Monday, Oct. 12.

The virtual athletics schedule outlines challenges for students to complete each week before in-person training, intramurals and conditioning resume Nov. 16.

If coronavirus metrics remain in moderate transmission, these will be the dates for condensed athletic seasons starting in 2021:

• Feb. 1- March 26 — Winter competitive season
• March 15- May 7 — Fall competitive season
• April 26- June 18 — Spring competitive season
