Holiday Checkpoint Near Bel Air Nets 8 DUI Arrests: Police

More than 350 vehicles passed through checkpoint set up on Thanksgiving eve, Maryland State Police reported.

BEL AIR, MD — There were eight DUI arrests during a holiday weekend traffic initiative in Bel Air, police reported.

The Bel Air Barrack of Maryland State Police set up a checkpoint just outside Bel Air where 366 vehicles passed through overnight from Wednesday, Nov. 23, to Thursday, Nov 24, according to police.

In addition to the eight drivers arrested for driving under the influence, authorities said they took one person into custody who was wanted as a fugitive.

Deputies from the Harford County Sheriff's Office as well as officers from the Aberdeen, Bel Air and Havre de Grace police departments joined troopers from the Bel Air and JFK Barracks of Maryland State Police for the initiative.

Troopers from the Bel Air and JFK Barracks also conducted a sobriety checkpoint on US 40 in Cecil County that netted four arrests, including two for impaired driving, one for drug possession and one for a warrant.

"Troopers would like to remind everyone traveling... drive with care; slow down, buckle up, and put down the cell phone!" police said in a statement.
