Ice Falls From Sky Onto Bel Air House, Plane Possible Culprit

The house was damaged, Harford County emergency officials said of the Friday incident.

BEL AIR, MD — A block of ice fell from the sky Friday afternoon, hitting and damaging a home in Bel Air, authorities said. Officials contacted the Federal Aviation Administration and said they learned two planes had recently passed over the area 15 minutes before the drop occurred.

It was 4 p.m. when firefighters were called to a house in the 900 block of Sidehill Drive, where the ice had broken into pieces on the front lawn and atop the widow's walk, according to Rich Gardiner.

First the ice hit and damaged the front gable of the home and an outside light, said Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

Nobody was injured, and there was minor damage to the home, Gardiner reported.

The weather was clear in the area, and so Gardiner said the Federal Aviation Administration was called in, and personnel there said that two aircraft had traveled above the area 15 minutes before.

The FAA will investigate, according to Gardiner, who said the source of the ice was unconfirmed.
