Jazz Vocalist Julie Kelly to Perform at Harford Community College
Jazz Vocalist Julie Kelly will perform in An Evening of Jazz on March 11 at Harford Community College.
As part of the East Coast CD Release Tour of her new CD “Happy To Be,” Jazz Vocalist Julie Kelly will perform in An Evening of Jazz on March 11 at 8 PM in Harford Community College’s Joppa Hall, Recital Hall.
A native of Oakland, California, Julie started performing in choral singing in prep school. She and her twin sister Kate formed a folk and blues duo and worked in local coffee houses, and they also performed as the opening act for Peter, Paul and Mary. Kelly spent 1971 in Brazil and then returned to the U.S. and lived in New York; those experiences had a profound influence on her music. After moving to Los Angeles in 1980, she began her recording career with Pausa Records. She recorded “We’re On Our Way” and “Never Let Me Go.” In 1992 she recorded “Some Other Time” on CMG Records with pianist/arranger Tom Gavin. In 1997, “Stories to Tell” was released in collaboration with pianist arranger Bill Cunliffe; they worked together again on her 1999 “Into the Light.” She and Tom Gavin teamed up again for “Kelly Sings Christy,” a vocal album that features Kelly’s interpretation and Tom’s arrangements of ballads associated with June Christy, an American singer known for her work in the cool jazz genre.
