Joseph Edward Siegmund Jr., 100

On Feb. 2, 2018, Joseph E. Siegmund Jr., at the age of 100 years old, passed away. He was born in Baltimore on Aug. 9, 1917, the third of 11 children of Joseph and Mary Siegmund. He was baptized at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in East Baltimore, and he was there for the final mass when the church closed in 2011. He was a graduate from Baltimore Polytechnic A course, class of 1935.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a tech sergeant in Patrons 4th armored division, one of the units of the Third Army that broke the German's siege of Bastogne. After discharge, he joined the Baltimore City police department, where he retired as lieutenant after 27 years of service. While with the department, he started volunteering with the March of Dimes for its yearly walkathon, a task he gladly performed for 40 years. Following retirement from the police department, he worked at MBNA credit card division and was instrumental in the move to the new headquarters in Delaware. During his retirement, he served six years as president of the Baltimore Retired Police Benevolent Association and eight years as a member of the Board of Trustees for Fire and Police Employees' Retirement System.

Joseph is survived by his beloved son Joseph Siegmund III and his wife Joan, his youngest brother Howard and his wife Barbara Lee Siegmund, his cherished grandchildren Heather, Michelle and Matthew and his wife Bridget, and his dear great-granddaughter Genevieve. Also survived by his cherished nieces; Elizabeth Kirkner, Nanette Nevate, Susan Roswell and Cathy Schaffer, and two nephews; Bill and John Siegmund.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Schimunek Funeral Home, 610 W. MacPhail Road, Bel Air, on Monday, Feb. 5, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church at 10 am. Interment Private.
