Kilgore Falls Among Region's Best Waterfalls: Thrillist

The waterfall near Rocks State Park made it onto the top 10 list.

A special spot in Harford County made it onto Thrillist's list of best waterfalls to visit this summer.

The outlet, which bills itself as a lifestyle resource, culled together its picks for waterfalls within two hours of Washington, D.C., and Kilgore Falls made the cut.

Also known as Falling Branch, Kilgore Falls is the second steepest free-falling waterfall in Maryland, according to the Maryland Geological Survey. It is 17 feet high. The steepest is Muddy Creek Falls in western Garrett County.

Thrillist isn't the only place featuring Kilgore Falls. The waterfall can be seen in the Disney film Tuck Everlasting. It also made it onto The Baltimore Sun's list of the "50 Most Beautiful Places in Maryland."

While it may be a hike for those from the D.C. area, Kilgore Falls is just a stone's throw from home for many in Harford County, located in the area of Rocks State Park.

Take Route 24 north through Rocks State Park, turn left on St. Mary's Road and turn right on Falling Branch Road. Use the parking lot on the right.

The Falling Branch Trail leads to Kilgore Falls.

Waterfall Safety Tips

There have been several instances of people getting injured at the falls in recent years.

Harford County emergency officials offer these tips for visitor safety at Kilgore Falls:

  • Know there may be rocks below, and it's a "swim at your own risk" area.
  • Abstain from alcohol.
  • Monitor children.
  • Lead with your feet; never dive head-first into the water.
  • Keep away from the edge of the rocks if going into the water.
  • Use common sense.
