Joppa Man Jumps From Burning Home, Listed In Critical Condition: State Fire Marshal

A 49-year-old Joppa man jumped from the 2nd floor of his burning home and is listed in critical condition. His wife and 2 children escaped.

JOPPA, MD — A 49-year-old man jumped from a second-floor window of a burning home in Joppa Tuesday. The man has burns to one of his arms and his back. He was taken by ambulance to Bayview Medication Center where he remains in critical but stable condition.

The first broke out around 5:45 p.m. at a home at 928 Rumsey Place, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Firefighters with the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company were first on the scene and it took 30 firefighters five minutes to control the fire.

The blaze was discovered in a bedroom by the occupants of the home. Firefighters were able to keep most of the fire contained to the bedroom with extensive smoke and soot damage to the rest of the home's second floor.

The injured man's wife and their two children age 11 and 8 were able to escape without injury. The two-story townhouse sustained $75,000 in damage.
