Man Walking with Goat Stops in Bel Air

Miles the goat and his handler Steve Wescott trekked through Bel Air to raise money for children in Africa.

BEL AIR, MD — Have you seen a man with a goat walking the streets of Bel Air?

Steve Wescott, 37, has spent years walking from Seattle, WA, to New York, NY, to raise money for Uzima Outreach, an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya, for children of addicts.

Miles the Alpine goat is accompanying Wescott on his walk, and they are currently in Bel Air.

Wescott is documenting the cross-country journey — which is nearly 4,000 miles — on social media, and those who see him have been posting pics along the way. He's traveling with a goat, he said, because they are pack animals that make good travel companions.

The duo made a stop over the weekend at Gunpowder Lodge on Belair Road, which posted a photo with the caption: "We can cater to almost any dietary needs at GPL!" showing Miles the goat munching on some vegetation outside.

Wescott hopes to raise $200,000 so that his friend who runs Uzima Outreach can buy a farm and create a self-sustaining refuge for orphans. There is an page set up for those who want to donate.

Before the cross-country walk, Wescott was in a Christian rock band. He said he received direction from God to take this journey. The walk started in May 2012, and Wescott is now 200 miles from his destination of Times Square; his website "Needle2Square documents the walk from the Space Needle to Times Square.

"The walking portion will be finished, but there is no end," Wescott said on a YouTube update this week from Baltimore. "Walking across America was the first step in a much longer walk through life. This is our life's work."

Wescott said he and Miles were traveling on US 1 and camped out Monday night in a park next to a mall. They planned to head toward Philadelphia.
