Winter Storm Warnings Call For Up To 12 Inches Of Snow In MD
Forecasters have increased snowfall predictions, now saying as much as 12 inches of snow could fall in the Baltimore-Washington metro area.
MARYLAND — Up to 12 inches of snow may fall in central Maryland Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. The agency issued weather alerts for much of the state through Tuesday morning, as the precipitation is expected to shift to a wintry mix overnight Sunday and be followed by more snow Monday.
Pedestrians should watch sidewalks, steps and driveways, which may be icy and slippery. Drivers should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles.
Travel is expected to be difficult.

Here is when the storm is expected to arrive Sunday:
- 1–3 a.m.: Western Maryland
- 3–5 a.m.: Anne Arundel, Calvert, Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's and St. Mary's counties
- 5–7 a.m.: Baltimore, Harford and Cecil counties and Baltimore City
- 8 a.m.: Eastern Shore and southern Maryland
From 1 a.m. Sunday to midnight Monday, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Charles, Montgomery and Prince George's counties. Forecasters say snow will be heaviest after sunrise Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon, with about 3 to 5 inches expected. More snow will fall Monday, with additional accumulations most likely around 1 to 3 inches, for a total from the storm of 4 to 8 inches of snowfall. The prolonged period of snow and wintry precipitation is expected to make travel difficult, especially as temperatures will be near or below freezing.

A winter storm warning in Baltimore, Cecil and Harford counties and Baltimore City is in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Tuesday calling for 6 to 12 inches of snow and 0.1 inch ice. Snow will blanket the area from 5 to 7 a.m. Sunday morning, then steadily fall Sunday afternoon and evening. Light snow is expected to mix with sleet and freezing rain Sunday night, then intermittently fall into Monday morning. Snow will fall steadily late Monday morning through Monday night, according to the winter storm warning.
A winter storm warning runs from 4 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Tuesday for Anne Arundel, Carroll, Frederick, Howard and Montgomery counties, also calling for 6 to 12 inches of snow and 0.1 ice. Snow will overspread the area between 3 and 5 a.m. Sunday, fall steadily late Sunday morning into early Sunday evening. Light snow will mix with sleet and freezing rain later Sunday night and become intermittent overnight into early Monday morning. Steadier snow is expected later Monday morning through Monday night.
A winter storm warning was posted for Calvert and St. Mary's counties from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday calling for 3 to 6 inches of heavy snow and around 0.1 inch ice. Snow will be heaviest Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon, and travel could be very difficult, according to the National Weather Service.
