Motorcyclist Dies in Crash on US 1 in Bel Air: Police

A man was killed in three-vehicle crash Saturday on Conowingo Road.

Bel Air, MD — A motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon near Bel Air after he crashed into an SUV and was thrown from his motorcycle into oncoming traffic, according to Maryland State Police.

Eddie Lee Mitzel, 45, of the 2100 block of Ruffs Mill Road, was riding his Harley Davidson south on US 1 and was approaching Gibson Road when he failed to stop as a Honda CRV in front of him was turning, Cpl. Stanley of the Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack told Patch. Mitzel ran into the Honda and was thrown from his motorcycle into northbound traffic, according to Stanley, who said the crash happened after 1 p.m.

A Dodge Ram hit Mitzel, who was pronounced deceased at the scene, Stanley said.

The crash site was less than a mile from Mitzel's home.

The drivers of all vehicles remained at the scene, and nobody else was injured, Stanley said.

No charges are pending, according to Stanley. Preliminarily, police said the cause appeared to be driver error.

US 1/Conowingo Road was closed in the area for approximately three and a half hours Saturday afternoon for the crash investigation, Stanley said.
