New Road in Joppatowne Honors Late Fire Chief

The Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company installed new addition to its firehouse.

There’s a new road in Joppatowne.

The sign for “Lloyd Way” was recently unveiled on the driveway to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company firehouse at 505 Trimble Road.

Lloyd Way honors the late Chief Derrick Lloyd, who died Dec. 22, 2014, after a long battle with cancer.

The Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company held a ceremony to install the sign this summer in collaboration with the Harford County Department of Emergency Services and Harford County Government.

Lloyd’s wife Michelle was in attendance at the Aug. 19 ceremony, according to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.

A Joppatowne native, Lloyd joined the fire company in 1988, was elected the Joppa-Magnolia Firefighter of the Year in 2005 and held the rank of chief from 2008 to 2011, according to a statement from the fire company.

In addition to serving as a firefighter, he was a member of the Harford County technical rescue team.

The sign bearing his name continues the tradition Lloyd established of leading the way; he trained firefighters from across the region as an instructor for the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute.

Lloyd was awarded the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Firefighter of the Year in 2008; and in 2014, he was named to the Harford-Cecil Volunteer Fireman’s Association Hall of Fame.

In a statement Wednesday, the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company said: “His legacy will live on at the JMVFC and House 2 ’Hooterville’ now located on Lloyd Way, Joppa, Maryland.”
