Two Hospitalized from Abingdon House Fire: Officials

Residents have been displaced by accidental fire, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

ABINGDON, MD – A father and son were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out in their Abingdon home Tuesday morning, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

At 9:03 a.m., the homeowner of a single-family home in the 3900 block of East Baker Avenue awoke to the smell of smoke, the fire marshal reported.

The 68-year-old man found heavy smoke on the first floor of the two-story home, then woke his 39-year-old son and together they escaped out the son’s first-floor window, according to the fire marshal.

Both were taken to Upper Chesapeake for treatment of smoke inhalation, the fire marshal reported. A woman who also lived in the home was not there are the time, as she had left earlier that morning, according to the report.

Approximately 25 firefighters—from Abingdon, Bel Air and Joppa-Magnolia—responded, bringing the fire under control within 10 minutes, officials said.

Authorities deemed the fire accidental, caused by discarded smoking material in the living room.

There was $45,000 in structural damage, according to the fire marshal, who said $25,000 worth of items inside the home were lost as well.

The fire marshal said that friends and neighbors were assisting the residents.

ABINGDON, MD – One person was injured in a house fire in Abingdon Tuesday morning, officials reported.

Crews were dispatched at 9:05 a.m. to a blaze in the 3900 block of East Baker Avenue, where they found smoke and a working fire, according to Mike Laslo, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

By 9:38 a.m., Laslo said the fire was declared under control. The Abingdon Fire Company and Joppa-Magnolia were among those responding.

There was one civilian injured, and that person’s condition was not immediately available, Laslo said.
