Pedestrian Killed in Hit and Run on Philadelphia Road: Police

Anyone who may have witnessed the fatal hit and run is asked to call the Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack at 410-879-2101.

Joppa, MD — A pedestrian was killed in a hit and run in Joppa Thursday morning, according to Maryland State Police. Authorities are asking for information from anyone who may have seen the collision.

After 4 a.m., authorities responded to a 911 call about a person lying in the road on Route 7 at Gunpowder Ridge Road; police said they found a citizen trying to administer CPR on the victim.

Timothy L. White Jr., 22, of Joppa, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His silver Honda CRV was found nearby on a hill along Gunpowder Ridge Road, still running and in drive.

Investigators determined that White purchased food at a convenience store on Joppa Farm Road after 2 a.m., while he told his relatives he anticipated to be home around 1 a.m. Officials said they were unsure of the circumstances that led to him lying on Philadelphia Road.

A pickup truck driver—Wayne A. Thompson, 61—was driving on MD 7 when he suddenly came upon White's body and struck him, according to police, who said Thompson was administering CPR to the victim when authorities arrived. Emergency medical services personnel attempted life-saving measures but to no avail, police reported; the man was pronounced deceased.

"After an examination of the victim’s body by a forensic examiner at the scene, it is unclear if the victim had been hit by another vehicle before being struck by the driver who stopped," police said. "Troopers are unsure at this time what caused the victim to be lying in the roadway."

Route 7 was closed for several hours for the police investigation.

"...preliminary investigation indicates an unknown vehicle struck the man, who was a pedestrian, and continued from the scene," Maryland State Police said in a statement.
