Planning Continues for Harford’s Oakington Peninsula Park System

Harford County has published the first round of public input on a future park system planned for 1,200 acres on the Oakington Peninsula.

Harford County has published the first round of public input on a future park system planned for 1,200 acres on the Oakington Peninsula between Aberdeen and Havre de Grace. Ideas and suggestions were solicited by the county to help it plan a network of parks and trails on the property, which includes more than two miles of Chesapeake Bay waterfront and many natural and historic treasures.

Community input was collected by the Harford County Department of Parks & Recreation at an open meeting in June and via email from May 30 – July 15, 2024.

Each comment was recorded and has since been published in a report available on the county’s website. The report identifies common themes and specific ideas for park features. Concerns, noteworthy facts, and respondents’ personal experiences in the area are also included.

The next step in the planning process is for Harford County to complete a map of potential uses for different areas within the park system. The map will be presented at a community meeting in the spring to collect additional feedback.

The Oakington Peninsula includes several contiguous properties owned by the county, including Swan Harbor Farm, the Carlson-Feltman Conservation Area, Belle Vue Farm, Eleanor and Millard Tydings Park, and the Mullins property.

“We are excited about the potential for active and passive recreation on the Oakington Peninsula, including a system of interconnected waterfront parks and trails that will be a jewel in our state and the region,” County Executive Bob Cassilly said. “I would like to thank everyone who contributed their ideas to help us begin planning for this amazing opportunity to attract visitors and enhance the quality of life in Harford County.”
