Rescue Me! Closing at Harford Mall

The Humane Society of Harford County says shelter is consolidating operations as new building opens.

Almost two years after opening, Rescue Me! at Harford Mall is closing.

The announcement comes shortly after The Mill at the Mall, which shared retail space with the rescue, moved out to focus on its standalone store on Main Street.

The Humane Society of Harford County opened its cat adoption store Rescue Me! in 2013 due to the number of cats looking for homes. The shelter reports it receives 4,500 animals annually. See animals currently up for adoption.

Since opening in September 2013, Rescue Me! at Harford Mall facilitated 481 cat adoptions, the organization reported Wednesday.

Rescue Me! will close at the end of June, according to the Humane Society of Harford County.

As one door closes, several more are set to open; the humane society is opening a brand-new facility that is 66 percent larger than its current Fallston headquarters.

“With the opening of the new shelter just months away, it makes sense to consolidate our operations under one roof,” Humane Society of Harford County Board of Directors President Pete Hicks said.

The 19,000-square-foot shelter will be housed on the property where the shelter currently is, with two community rooms for cats, including access to outside; a separate kitten room and nursery; a retail shop; and private rooms to meet pets.

Said Hicks: “...the new shelter has many of the same features as Rescue Me! at Harford Mall, with the advantage of more room and more staff to better serve the Harford County community.”

The new shelter is set to open in late fall/early winter at 2208 Connolly Road in Fallston, according to Erin Montgomery, marketing coordinator for the Humane Society of Harford County.

The Humane Society thanked two organizations in particular for their support of the satellite operation at the mall: Baron’s K9 Country Store and The Mill of Bel Air, both of which sold pet supplies inside the same space.

“Baron’s and The Mill enabled us to expand into Harford Mall, and without their support, Rescue Me! at Harford Mall might never have opened,” Hicks said. “Because of their commitment to helping homeless animals, almost 500 cats and kittens found homes during the two years we were open.”
