Sobriety Checkpoint In Harford County Set For Thanksgiving Eve
A Maryland State Police sobriety checkpoint will take dangerous drivers off the road and raise awareness about impaired driving.

BEL AIR, MD — Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Thanksgiving eve in Harford County. The Maryland State Police Bel Air barrack announced that troopers will be out in force finding impaired drivers and taking them off the road on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
In addition, officers aim to promote awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.
"As you prepare to celebrate all of the festivities, keep in mind that impairment by alcohol or drugs can be deadly," Maryland State Police said in a statement.

Approximately one in three traffic deaths in the U.S. involves a drunk driver, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Being arrested for driving while impaired can lead to jail time, classes, license suspension and expenses exceeding $10,000, police said.

Drinkers are encouraged designate a sober driver or get the Safer Ride app, which is sponsored by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and pulls up taxi services in the area.

While the location of the checkpoint was not disclosed, officials are required by law to announce the sobriety checkpoint in advance.
Following a Supreme Court case regarding the 4th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution, the court ruled that citizens' rights to security against unlawful search and seizure are not violated if the checkpoint is publicized in advance.
