Space Heater Sparks House Fire, Injuring Edgewood Man: Fire Marshal

An 82-year-old Edgewood man suffered serious injuries after a space heater sparked a fire at his home, reports the State Fire Marshal.

EDGEWOOD, MD — An 82-year-old Edgewood resident was taken to the hospital with first- and second-degree burns to his face and legs, along with smoke inhalation, after he tried to extinguish a house fire caused by a space heater that sparked a blaze in a bedroom Thursday around 6:45 p.m.

Approximately 30 firefighters with the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company responded to the call for help. It took them around 10 minutes to rein in the fire, which was reported by the homeowner, Guy E. Moore, and neighbors, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office.

Moore was taken by ambulance to Bayview Medical Center. The home, located at 1942 Michael Drive in Edgewood, sustained $50,000 in damage and loss of property.

"The Office of the State Fire Marshal reminds citizens to never plug space heaters into an extension cord and to keep the heater at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including people," the office stated.
