Storm Leads To Flooding, Outages Around Bel Air

Inches of rain led to road closures and power outages in parts of Harford County.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — More than 3 inches of rain were reported in parts of Harford County Thursday night while the area was under severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings. The storms resulted in traffic snarls and power outages.

Trained weather spotters recorded 3.1 inches of rain in Whiteford and 2.75 inches of rain in Bel Air after 5 and 6 p.m. respectively, according to preliminary data submitted to the National Weather Service.

More than 5,300 BGE customers in Harford County have had their power restored since the severe weather hit on Thursday, July 11, according to the utility company.

There were 89 BGE customers who remained without power in Harford County as of 9:15 a.m. on Friday, July 12, mainly around Bel Air South.

These roads were impacted by flooding, according to Harford County's road closure database: Clayton Road, Connolly Road, Millwood Drive, Patterson Mill Road, Regal Drive, Singer Road, East Wheel Road and Winters Run Road.

Several traffic lights went out in the county because of the storm, Harford County officials said after 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 11.

Among them were MD 24 at West Macphail Road, according to the Bel Air Police Department.

"Traffic traveling on West MacPhail will only be able to make right turns on to north or south Route 24. No cross traffic!!" the Bel Air police reported. "Traffic traveling on north and south Route 24 WILL NOT be allowed to make left turns on to Macphail Road. If you need to access UCMC (Upper Chesapeake Medical Center) please take South Tollgate Road to West Macphail."

Drivers who come to a traffic light that is not functioning should treat it like a four-way stop.
