“She’s always the first one to get a ground ball, so you kind of notice her on the field,” Smith said.

With the team slowly evolving each year, Smith counts on more experienced players, such as Burris, to help mold the younger athletes.

“Our team is pretty young this year so it’s nice to have her as one of the older players to kind of encourage everyone and make them believe in themselves,” Smith said.

Burris leads the younger players by example.

“Even if I’m not the best player out there, my heart and intensity pushes me to be the best player I can be and to contribute 100 percent each game,” she said.

Smith knows how dedicated Burris is—not only athletically, but academically. Burris has maintained a 4.0 GPA at Patterson Mill.

“I taught her since she was in middle school, so we go way back,” Smith said. “She is a fantastic student.”

Burris has next year and said she is nervous but can’t wait to learn more about the sport.

“It will be a new transition to play with all new girls and have a new coach, but I’m really, really excited,” she said.

Burris plans to major in accounting and international business, and eventually follow in her mother’s footsteps as a public accountant.

“I just love to travel and I love working with people,” she said.

The Huskies travel to Elkton at 11 a.m. Saturday for a regional quarterfinal matchup.
