Death Of Harford Soldier Leads To Outpouring Of Support

After a Harford County special forces soldier was killed in Afghanistan, an online fundraiser provides place to share memories, support.

Donations are pouring in along with love for the family of a Harford County special forces soldier who died this week in combat.

Staff Sgt. Mark R. De Alencar, 37, of Edgewood, was killed when confronted by enemy forces on April 8 in the Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

In one day, a GoFundMe account set up to support the De Alencar family received more than $10,000 in donations. The campaign was established by a person who identified herself as a fellow military wife and friend of the family; all funds raised will go toward De Alencar's wife and their five children.

As of 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, more than $11,100 had been raised.

De Alencar died "doing what he wanted to do," his uncle, Jansen Robinson, told ABC 2 News. The soldier had recently become part of special forces. He was killed in combat by small arms fire from enemy forces while battling ISIS in Afghanistan.

A memorial service has not been set for De Alencar. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery before mid-May, The Aegis reported.
