Towson University in Bel Air Gets Off the Ground
The four-year degree program at Harford Community College has more than 200 students enrolled in first semester.

Leaders of Harford Community College and Towson University united recently to mark the grand opening of Towson University in Northeastern Maryland.
In the four-year baccalaureate program, students spend their first two years studying at Harford Community College (HCC), then transition into the Towson University building across the street for their final two years.
Approximately 70 percent of students from HCC transfer to Towson, according to Towson University’s Acting President Timothy Chandler. “They come to us anyway,” Chandler said. “Why not make it easier for them by having a place up here?”

Northeastern Maryland is the “only region in the state that doesn’t have a four-year institution in close proximity,” HCC President Dennis Golladay said in an article by The Daily Record.
Towson University reports that 218 full and part-time students enrolled this fall in the new program at the $28 million building across Thomas Run Road from HCC. Most students are studying psychology or elementary education, according to Towson student newspaper The Towerlight.

Towson University in Northeastern Maryland currently includes six majors—business administration, psychology, sociology, information technology, elementary education/special education and early childhood education/special education, according to Towson University.
The areas of study were in alignment with demand; most HCC students transfer to a four-year college to study business, psychology, sociology or teacher education, Golladay said.
A family studies major with children’s services and youth track will be added in fall 2015, according to Towson. Enrollment next year is projected to double, The Daily Record reports.
