Fatal Train Crash Near Edgewood Station Under Investigation

Due to the deadly train-pedestrian collision, train traffic hit significant delays Wednesday night for MARC and Amtrak riders.

EDGEWOOD, MD — One person died in a crash involving an Amtrak train on Wednesday night, according to authorities. The crash occurred near the Edgewood station.

A person trespassing at the Edgewood MARC station and an Amtrak Acela Express train were involved in the incident, according to Vernae Graham of Amtrak. The train travels between Washington and New York.

The crash occurred at 7:54 p.m., and railway operations were suspended until 9:54 p.m., affecting nine Amtrak trains, Graham said. Neither the 190 passengers nor the crew aboard the Acela Express Train 2126 was injured, she reported.

MARC 544, which departed Washington at 6:23 p.m., was stopped south of the Edgewood station after 8:30 p.m. It normally arrives in Perryville by 8:13 p.m. but instead returned to Martin State Airport and Penn Station so that passengers could disembark. Although bus service was being coordinated, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) encouraged passengers to find alternate transportation if their destination was in Harford or Cecil counties.

There would be a "substantial delay due to [a] suspected trespasser strike in the vicinity outside of Edgewood Station," the MTA reported at 8:32 p.m. in a notification to MARC riders.

MARC 548, which leaves Washington at 9 p.m., terminated at Martin State as well, and those headed to Edgewood, Aberdeen and Perryville were advised to get off at Penn Station for alternate transportation.

As of 11:10 p.m., Train 137 was "back on the move" and would arrive in Baltimore shortly, according to Amtrak Northeast officials. That train, which is a regional one, normally arrives in Baltimore at 9:01 p.m., according to the Amtrak schedule, so it was delayed by more than two hours.
