Two Charged with Murder After Abingdon Man's Body Found: Sheriff

Search teams recovered body of Edward W. Hayden III Monday morning, authorities report.

Two men have been charged with murder in the stabbing death of 28-year-old Edward W. Hayden III of Abingdon, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

Hayden, of the 300 block of Forsythia Drive, was fatally stabbed on Sunday, Jan. 4, the sheriff’s office reported.

His body was recovered from Susquehanna State Park near Havre de Grace at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, the report said.

Two men have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in connection with Hayden’s death:

  • Sean Thomas Turkot, 28, of the 300 block of Forsythia Drive in Abingdon
  • Alexander William Smoot, 29, of the 1800 block of Petula Court in Forest Hill

Both suspects are at the Harford County Detention Center, authorities said.

Deputies began investigating after Hayden’s girlfriend reported he was missing at approximately 7:18 p.m. on Sunday, the report said.

Hayden and his girlfriend lived in an apartment in Abingdon with Turkot, the sheriff’s office reported.

Both Turkot and Smoot were taken into custody at the Forsythia Drive residence, according to the sheriff’s office.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., detectives developed information that led them to investigate the area near Susquehanna State Park, the sheriff’s office reported.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office patrol and helicopter teams, Level Volunteer Fire Company, Aberdeen Volunteer Fire Company, Susquehanna Hose Company and Department of Natural Resources assisted in the search, the sheriff’s office reported.

At 10:30 a.m., Natural Resource Police reported the body was recovered. A motive for the murder has not been determined, authorities said. The investigation is ongoing.
