We Cancerve: A Day at the Ulman House
Area youth spent a day in service in East Baltimore with the Ulman Foundation in honor of World Cancer Day Feb. 4
Today, We Cancerve Movement Board Members Ashlee Brockwell, Grace Callwood, Deetya Chhatwal, Gurnek Chhatwal, Katelyn O’Connor, Abigail Slovick and their families spent the day at the Ulman House in East Baltimore.
This newly-renovated building is three floors, one of which serves as free housing for young adult patients undergoing cancer treatment, and two of which include areas for opportunities for group activity and interactions with other patients. The structure is comprised of six former row homes.
The We Cancerve team, under leadership of the House Manager of the Ulman House Maeve Koch, spent the day cleaning the building. The team did everything from mop the floors to even color coordinate the library!

At the end of the day, the team sat down with Maeve to do what really lifts the spirits of residents the most. Each volunteer personalized postcards for the residents including coloring picture on the front and hand-writing words of encouragement on the back.
Board Member Abigail Slovick, age 17, was personally touched through this service experience, saying, “I kept thinking about the families and young adults who will be staying there and how, by helping out even a little, we were helping make the lives a little easier or a little brighter. People should be focusing on the well-being of themselves and their loved ones, not on cleaning up or anything like that! I think we made the lives of the residents a little better, which could maybe make all the difference!”

There are many other service opportunities to help at the Ulman House. They are in need of volunteers to make breakfast and dinner for the residents, organize group activities such as game nights, movie nights, art projects or music, and donations of single-serve snacks and toiletries.
