Sleet fell across Maryland Sunday after 4 to 6 inches of snow covered much of the Baltimore region, causing dangerous travel conditions. Power outages have been minimal so far, with less than 500 customers without power so far.
Maryland State Police urged residents to stay home Sunday night, saying the agency had received nearly 1,000 calls for service and responded to 62 crashes.

"Your safety is our priority, always. Snow may have subsided in places and in some areas changed to sleet/rain so we continue to remind Marylanders that roadways remain treacherous," state police said about 6:30 p.m. "Please avoid travel if possible. If you do have to travel, take it slow and don’t crowd the plow.
A winter storm warning remains in place across all of Maryland through 4 a.m. Monday. Maryland officials have declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, and President Trump has approved a presidential disaster declaration. Because of icing expected in the Baltimore-DC area, federal workers have been told to work remotely on Monday.

In a new storm forecast released Sunday morning, the National Weather Service said the Baltimore region will likely see sleet mixed with snow becoming all sleet after 3 p.m., and could be heavy at times. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches are possible.
Forecasters said 6 to 10 inches of snow and sleet accumulation are likely for most of the Baltimore area, with up to a foot in the northern and northwestern suburbs.
Freezing rain and sleet are expected before 10 p.m., then freezing rain between 10 p.m. Sunday and 4 a.m. Monday, then a chance of snow later Monday morning, the National Weather Service said.
As of 11 a.m., just over 1,000 utility customers were without power statewide, according to the tracking site PowerOutage.US.
As of Saturday, a winter storm warning is in effect for the entire state from 11 p.m. Saturday until 4 a.m. Monday.

Significant icing is possible, especially south of Highway 50. Visibility of one-quarter mile or less is possible at times.
Travel will be hazardous to near impossible, and at times may be life-threatening, throughout the weekend, said state officials.
Snowfall totals as of 7 p.m. Sunday included:
- BWI Airport 7.6
- Cockeysville 10.0
- Baltimore City 8.2
- Eldersburg 7.5
- Bel Air 7.0
- Columbia 7.5

“Keeping our people safe is always our top priority, but local officials, law enforcement, and first responders cannot do it alone,” Gov. Wes Moore said Friday. “Do not travel unless it is absolutely necessary. Staying off the roads is essential to keeping routes clear for law enforcement, snow removal crews, and emergency responders so they can do their jobs without delay.”
Moore declared a state of emergency on Friday, which allows for Maryland agencies and resources to be on standby during and after the storm. Moore also said he had reached out to the President Donald Trump administration and requested a federal emergency declaration.

The storm is also bringing frigid air to Maryland, with high temperatures only reaching the low 20s or teens Tuesday through Friday. Overnight lows at times will be in the single digits.
Cold weather advisories were also issued across much of the area and are expected to expire at noon Saturday.
"A large area of precipitation will overrun Arctic air in place over the Mid-Atlantic. This will lead to widespread significant snow, with the potential for ice today, especially south of Highway 50 and
near and east of Interstate 95," the NWS said Sunday. "In addition to the high threat for
significant snow and ice, very cold temperatures are expected tonight through the middle of next week with sub-zero wind chills likely at times."
Counties included in the winter storm warning are: Baltimore, Cecil, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Howard, and Harford.
