The water main break was traced to the intersection of Arlington Road and Bradley Boulevard.
Police said Bradley Boulevard was closed between Arlington and Hillandale roads.
Extended closures took effect just before 2:30 p.m.
Lanes in both directions between Arlington Road and Leland Street are also closed, according to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.
Photos from the scene showed water covering several lanes.
Drivers are urged to avoid the surrounding areas and seek alternative routes.
No timeline on when the road closures may be lifted was provided.
