The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service said that a young man had become separated from a group of swimmers on Sunday around 6:15 p.m. He was last seen near the Sandy Landing river access point on the Maryland side of the Potomac River.

MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said first responders had searched on foot and by boat and air, adding that authorities believe the man may have drowned.

The man was attempting to swim from the Maryland to Virginia side side of the Potomac River when he got separated from his group, according to Piringer.

The search, which is being conducted in partnership with US Park Police and Fairfax Fire and Rescue officials, was previously suspended late Sunday after officials lost daylight.
