BETHESDA, MD — A Waldorf man was recently sentenced to serve 18 months in prison after stealing checks that amounted to nearly $196,000 from mailboxes in Bethesda.
A release issued Wednesday by the State's Attorney's Office said Dominque James Miles, 29, was sentenced to eight years in prison with all but 18 months suspended. He is expected to be on supervised probation for an additional five years
Miles was sentenced on Oct. 16, shortly after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit identity fraud to obtain over $100,000 in funds.
Investigators said Miles stole checks from multiple USPS mailboxes in Bethesda that totaled $195,673.64, none of which were cashed. However, a search of his home led to the discovery of $30,000 in cash.
Also found at Miles' home was a USPS "arrow key," a master key used to access outdoor collection boxes, lockers and apartment panels. Officials said it remains unknown how the key came into Miles' possession.
The thefts occurred between Dec. 1, 2022, and April 10, 2023, according to the release. Authorities identified seven individuals whose checks were stolen.
