BOWIE, MD — Christian Moten's father bought him a set of plastic golf clubs when he was 3. He hasn't looked back ever since.

Now 6-years-old, the Bowie boy is one of the best young golfers in Maryland. He will head to Walt Disney World this weekend to compete in the Under Armour Junior Tour National Championships. Christian Moten earned a spot in the tournament after finishing in the top eight of his age bracket of the Southern Maryland qualifiers.

"I am so proud of his determination, resilience, sportsmanship and that he is a role model to his younger brother, Channing," Christian Moten's mother, Ericka Moten, told Patch in an email. "I am proud of his commitment to this sport and he understands the value of practice and never giving up."

Christian Moten is a student of the game. He frequently studies the swings of professionals on the Golf Channel with his dad. This film time fused with hours of father-son practice molded Christian Moten's swing into what it is today.

The boy looks up to his favorite pro, Tiger Woods. Both Woods and Christian Moten are Black golfers in a predominantly white game.

Christian Moten spends plenty of time on his favorite course, The Country Club At Woodmore. As a junior, the athlete plays nine holes and touts an average score of 44. He hopes to continue that trend this weekend in Orlando, Florida.

Christian Moten tees off Saturday at 11:40 a.m. The results will be posted here.

"As his mom, I am so overjoyed with his success," Ericka Moten concluded. "I am in awe that he's remained humble through it all."
