850 Jobs Coming to New Carrollton: Report

Kaiser Pemanente plans to build a new administrative center, IT facility near Metro station.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY — A subsidiary of health care giant Kaiser Permanente plans to bring up to 850 jobs to Prince George's County when it opens a new administrative center near the New Carrollton Metro station, county officials announced Thursday

The 176,000-square-foot center and IT facility will be opened by Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States in Urban Atlantic’s development next to the Metro station, said County Executive Rushern Baker III.

"Kaiser’s decision today provides the county with what may be the largest single new employer of my administration," Baker said Thursday in a statement. "It has been exciting to watch New Carrollton grow dramatically over the past five years."

Construction on the building is expected to be completed by November 2018, the Washington Business Journal reported Thursday.

The area around the New Carrollton station is designated by the county as a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) community. The new Kaiser Permanente facility will join the Internal Revenue Service and its over 2,500 employees at New Carrollton, Baker said, as well as the headquarters for Maryland's Department of Housing and Community Development and the headquarters for 2U Inc.

Kaiser Pemanente officials said they chose the New Carrollton site "in part because it will provide easy Metro access and walkable surroundings," the Business Journal reported.
