9/11 Volunteer Events: Bowie To Host 7 Projects To Honor Victims

BOWIE, MD — Bowie will host seven community service events this weekend to mark the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

"Volunteerism plays such a crucial role in our community," Bowie wrote on its website. "We will continue that tradition on September 11 when the City will sponsor [several] service projects that residents can participate in to honor the memory of the men, women and children who lost their lives on that sad day."

In addition to volunteering, the city will lower its flags to half staff. It will also observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., which was when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Trade Center in New York City.

Another plane crashed into the Twin Towers soon after. Two more followed, crashing into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The attacks killed at least 19 Prince Georgians.

"The impact of these tragic events forever changed our nation and our world," Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said in a newsletter. "Let us all take a moment to honor the memory of those that perished and all those who sacrificed their lives to save others."

Bowie's reflective service efforts all happen Saturday unless noted otherwise. Here are the options:

"Toiletry Drive at Walmart in Bowie

Toiletries are needed to help families in need in the Bowie area. The City of Bowie will have volunteers at the Walmart in Bowie (3300 Crain Highway) from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. on September 11 to collect these essential items. Please stop by and donate.

Summer's End Children's Program

This event will be held at the City of Bowie Gymnasium (4100 Northview Drive), from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. on September 11. It will include giveaways for kids, games, and the opportunity to write notes or create pictures to give to our veterans, first responders and seniors. Residents may drop off new/unused toiletry items or canned goods at the City of Bowie Gymnasium any time between now and September 11, 2021. Items will be donated to those in need.

Weed Warriors

Partnering with City of Bowie Green Team, volunteers will stop the assault on our forests of the non-native, invasive, English Ivy vine by pulling the vine off trees. Volunteers for this project must be 14 years of age, and accompanied by a parent or guardian if under the age of 16. Volunteers should bring work gloves, a face mask, and wear long pants and long sleeves. The Gabriel Network

Gabriel Network’s Maternity Homes offer rent-free community housing for pregnant women in need of a safe, stable place to live. The organization has a storage shed they need cleaned out and organized. Bowie United Methodist Church

Bowie United Methodist Church will conduct a door-to-door wellness check on neighbors in Old Bowie from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the church (13009 6th St. Bowie) and disperse in teams. Sidewalk Overgrowth Removal – Levitt Community

Join the City of Bowie Code Enforcement team and assist with removing sidewalk overgrowth for seniors and disabled residents. Please contact Drew Meloy at ameloy@cityofbowie.org to register.

Temple Solel (Sunday, September 12)

Temple Solel will host their annual High Holy Days Food Drive on Sunday, September 12 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Donations of canned or boxed food may be dropped off at Temple Solel (2901 Mitchellville Road).
