Phone Scam Reported By Hyattsville Police

HYATTSVILLE, MD — Police officers in Hyattsville are warning residents of a phone scam circulating in the area.

Scammers are calling from private or restricted numbers, pretending to be court officials or law enforcement. They're telling residents that they missed a federal court date after having been subpoenaed by certified mail, which didn't actually happen, and then say that a warrant has been issued for the resident's arrest.

"They’ll pressure you to 'resolve' it immediately by paying a fine, often directing you to Walmart or another retailer to send money via wire transfer, money order or prepaid gift cards. This is a scam. No legitimate government agency or federal court will ever demand payment this way or call you to collect fines over the phone. Official matters are handled through the U.S. Mail and proper legal channels," the Hyattsville Police Department stated.

Authorities recommend residents take the following action if they receive such a phone call:

• Hang up immediately. This is your best defense.
• Do not share personal or financial information.
• Verify independently. Look up your local District Court’s official number and call directly.
• Report it to us.

"Scammers rely on fear and urgency. Don’t let them rush you into disclosing information," the police department stated.
