Man Arrested In Armed Carjacking A Suspect In Previous Shooting

An 18-year-old has been charged in an armed carjacking and in a shooting that happened earlier in the month, police say.

BOWIE, MD — Police have charged an 18-year-old in connection to an armed carjacking that happened Thursday during the noon hour in Bowie.

Around 12:40 p.m. Thursday, Prince George's police officers were called to the 1900 block of Grand Way Boulevard in Bowie. A woman told people she had been carjacked and the suspect had a gun. She wasn't injured but the suspect took off in her 2014 Lexus sedan, according to police.

Detectives found the victim's vehicle Friday in Lanham. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver -later identified as 18-year-old Kairee Hicks of Bowie - took off, leading police on a brief chase that ended in him crashing. Hicks then took off on foot but was arrested during a search of the area, according to police.

During Hick's arrest, officers found a loaded handgun with an obliterated serial number. Additional evidence linking him to the carjacking was recovered during the investigation. Hicks has been charged with multiple offenses, including armed carjacking, carjacking, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, illegal possession of a handgun and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number among other charges.

At the same time, detectives with the gun crimes unit obtained an arrest warrant charging Hicks in a shooting that happened April 10. They say Hicks shot and seriously wounded a man in the 7100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway during a fight between the two men.
