Child Found Drunk At School, Mom Demands Investigation

A mom wants to know how her 6-year-old obtained alcohol after she was found to be drunk at school. An ER doc said she had alcohol poisoning.

SUITLAND, MD — The mother of a 6-year-old child has demanded an investigation into why her daughter was found drunk at her elementary school.

Video captured in the school nurse's office at Princeton Elementary shows the first-grader stumbling around, according to reports. The school nurse and administrators told the mom they thought her daughter had fallen and hurt herself.

“That’s not my child,” the mother told NBC Washington was her first thought when watching the video. “That’s not how I sent her to school.”

When the mom spoke with her little girl on the phone, she told her mom she was dizzy. But when the mom arrived at the school, her little girl was unresponsive, reports indicate.

“She's breathing heavy on the floor,” she told NBC Washington. “You know, even just calling her, she won't wake up.”

Tests ran at the hospital revealed the little girl had acute alcohol intoxication. Alcohol poisoning can be fatal, ER doctors emphasized.

“It hurt my heart,” her mother said. “You know, I’m still not over it, that my child, I could be possibly planning a funeral for my child.”

The mother told NBC Washington that no one knows how the little girl got ahold of alcohol at the school. The 6-year-old said she drank something red that tasted like Kool-Aid.

Prince George's County Public Schools issued a statement to NBC Washington stating that "school staff responded promptly and followed established emergency protocols to ensure the student received appropriate medical care." The school system confirmed Child Protective Services launched an investigation.
