2 Men Arrested In Rash Of UMD Residential Burglaries

Two men have been charged in connection to a string of residential burglaries that happened on the University of Maryland campus.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Two individuals have been arrested in connection to three burglaries reported at the University of Maryland campus apartments.

University of Maryland Police said they received numerous tips from the community, as well as two additional reports of residential burglaries and another incident that were linked back to the suspects in the first three burglaries.

The three burglaries reportedly happened Aug. 30 between 1:30 and 9 a.m., according to authorities. Around 4:17 a.m., University of Maryland police officers were called to the third floor of South Campus Commons #3 for a report of a burglary.

According to campus police, a resident was in another part of the apartment when she heard a noise coming from the common area. She opened the door and saw a man in the apartment's common area, according to campus police. The suspect then took off.

That same day around 9:52 a.m., campus police were called back to South Campus Commons #3 for another report of a burglary. Around 9 a.m., students found kitchen items on the floor in the common area. Officers searched the area to speak with potential witnesses living in nearby apartments and found a third residence had also been burglarized, according to campus police.

Around 7:30 a.m., students in the third residence found items left out in the kitchen area that had not been there previously, and in the living room.

Regarding the three additional incidents, a student reported she left her residence Aug. 29 around 11 p.m. and returned the next day around 4:30 a.m. She found water on the floor and property missing.

Two students reported being asleep Aug. 30 around 11:58 p.m. when one of them woke up to the door being opened to their room. The student saw a man open the door and another man in the hallway. The man at the door tried to talk to the students, but the resident got up and closed the door.

Also on Aug. 30, a student told police that around 5 a.m., she heard knocking at her door. She opened it and saw two men. They talked briefly with her, then they both left.
