COLLEGE PARK, MD — Charges have been reduced against a 16-year-old accused of shooting and wounding a 15-year-old Largo High School classmate during an attempted robbery involving a $1,000 Moose Knuckles jacket late last month.
On Sept. 24, Prince George's police officers were called to the Prince George's Community College for a reported shooting. Officers learned that around 11:40 a.m. on Thursday, a teen boy had walked into a medical center with a gunshot wound not considered life-threatening. The police department confirmed that the teen had been shot on the community college campus.
The shooting prompted Prince George's Community College to order students to shelter in place as numerous police officers responded to the campus. Nearby Largo High School was also placed on lockdown as a precaution. Both lockdowns were later lifted.
The teen initially was charged as an adult with attempted first- and second-degree murder, armed robbery, first- and second-degree assault and use of a firearm during a violent crime.
During a brief court hearing Friday, Prince George's County Assistant State's Attorney Elizabeth Amstutz said the case will instead move to the juvenile justice system.
The teenager will be transferred to a juvenile facility and now faces charges of reckless endangerment, carrying a handgun and carrying a loaded handgun. The more serious attempted murder, robbery and assault charges have been dropped, Amstutz announced.
