PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A Maryland family searched for two weeks for their missing 16-year-old female relative, only to learn that she'd been hospitalized as the sole survivor in a Sept. 26 crash in Virginia that killed three other teens.
According to Virginia State Police, four teens were in a stolen vehicle when police tried to pull them over. The teen driver took off and a police pursuit ensued on Interstate 395 in norther Virginia. The teen driver sped onto I-395 northbound and tried to exit at a high speed onto Shirlington Road before losing control. The car ran off the right side of the ramp and slammed into the jersey wall, according to authorities.
The pursuit lasted approximately two minutes and covered about five miles, Virginia State Police said. None of the four teenagers was wearing a seat belt, and the driver did not have a valid driver's license, authorities said.
A 16-year-old girl, whom News 4 identified only as Marta, was the only survivor. A 17-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene and two 16-year-old boys died at a hospital, authorities said.
Marta remains hospitalized as she recovers from injuries sustained in the car crash. Her family told News 4 that authorities took two weeks to identify Marta and notify them.
Detectives continue to investigate the incident.
