HYATTSVILLE, MD — Plans are underway for a new 87,000-square-foot community center in Hyattsville that could include a pool, gym, indoor splash park, sports fields and dedicated spaces for teens and seniors.
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is planning the multigenerational center on the sites of the existing Prince George's Plaza Community Center and the former Beth Torah Congregation.
Construction is set to begin in late 2027 with completion set for 2029, officials stated.
Current plans call for a pool and gym on the east side of the new building, along with group exercise rooms, fitness areas and an elevated track.
Other portions of the building and surrounding outdoor space have not yet been finalized.
Possible indoor amenities include a culinary learning lab, dedicated areas for teens and seniors, a preschool child care area, indoor futsal field, martial arts area, computer lab and indoor splash park.
Outdoor amenities could include soccer, lacrosse and football fields, hiking and biking trails, a playground, community garden and picnic areas. A rooftop field also is being considered.
The outdoor spaces would connect with existing parks in the area.
Residents can weigh in on the proposed amenities during an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Prince George's Plaza Community Center, 6600 Adelphi Road, across from the Hyattsville library.
