Beauty Business Launched By Teen Takes Off In Prince George's County

A full-service beauty-enhancing business launched by a Prince George's County teen while in high school has continued to grow.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Starting her own lash business has been an eye-opening experience for Bowie State University freshman Kaci Harris, but one that has been quite successful.

Harris started the business, KM Beauty, while as a student at Bowie High School. She took a course in lashes from a professional cosmetologist and along the way earned a $500 award from the Psi Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to support her business. She attended a virtual small business workshop along with 170 other participants where she was surprised with the award.

The webinar was part of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Target 3 program, Building Your Economic Legacy, which includes supporting African-American entrepreneurs.

“This workshop was a community service that offered free resources and services to all business owners whether they were just starting out or had been in business for many years,” said Benita A. Swindell, president of PEO and Pearl Elegance Foundation, Inc.. “What we are most proud of is being able to support a teen business owner. We were very impressed with Kaci Harris’ pitch to grow her current business, her ambition and overall entrepreneurial spirit.”

Harris said she was "surprised and grateful" when given the award. KM Beauty offers full-service beauty-enhancing services, such as eyelash extensions, eyebrow waxing, braids and natural hair care.
