Body Camera Footage From Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting Released

Body camera footage that shows a fatal shooting by Riverdale Park Police in September has been released.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — The body-worn camera footage from the police-involved shooting that killed 75-year-old Bryan Coupal Sept. 19 in Riverdale Park has been released by the Independent Investigations Division of the Office of the Attorney General.

On Sept. 19 at about 3:30 p.m., officers with the Riverdale Park Police Department went to a home in the 4700 block of Oglethorpe Street in Riverdale Park for a report of a suicidal man, Coupal, who had access to firearms. Officers spoke for nearly 20 minutes with Coupal at the front door of the home.

On the video, police asked Coupal about whether he wanted to harm himself, which he denied, and a doctor alerted police he was suicidal.

"I'm telling you I don't intend to harm myself, I don't intend to harm anyone else, and I have an errand to run, and that's it, that's the end of the story," Coupal told an officer as they talked at the front door.

Eventually, Coupal went back inside the home and then to an upstairs bedroom, according to the Maryland Attorney General's Office.

Officers followed Coupal inside the home and told him to stop, but he did not comply. Once inside the bedroom, Coupal pointed a handgun at officers, police said.

One officer discharged their firearm, striking Coupal. Officers rendered aid until medical personnel arrived. Coupal was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the Maryland Attorney General's Office said.
